The contest component of the Recycling Program was started in 2005 and is ongoing. It begins at the start of the school year and continues until March 31, after which Keep Bartow Beautiful randomly pulls the school bins and takes a final count of their recyclables. This is done by weighing the bins and then dividing the total weight by the total number of students.  In May, the winning schools (according to category - Elementary or Middle/High) receive checks - $500 for 1st, $300 for 2nd and $250 for 3rd and $200 for 4th in each category.  Merit awards of $100 may be awarded for exemplary effort.  * As 2018/2019 School year: to be eligible a school must recycle 10,000 lbs.  That is the break even point for services associated with Keep Bartow Beautifu and Bartow County Solid waste.
