Great American Cleanup in Bartow

Nine area cleanups held annually on the fourth Saturday in April (Keep Georgia Beautiful Month)

The Great American Cleanup is a nationwide effort to clean up communities across the country. All over America, the over 500 Keep America Beautiful affiliates join with their national and state programs to clean up, recycle, plant trees and flowers, remove graffiti, and beautify beaches, parks, playgrounds and neighborhoods. The nation’s largest community improvement program in 2003 mobilized over 2 million volunteers in 14,000 communities in a total of over 30,000 “hands on” cleanup projects. National and State Sponsors support the work of volunteers in our nine area cleanups, and local sponsors donate time, money, and materials to the cause, helping with refreshments, door prizes, and t-shirts. They also support the Envirofest!, a celebration of the environment held on the last Saturday in April following the Great American Cleanup events. This event is held downtown at the Courthouse Complex, with educational exhibits, environmental crafts, foods and entertainment. The following communities sponsor local Great American Cleanup events:

• Allatoona Community Association - Special Day!
• City of Adairsville
• Bartow County - Gene Thacker Memorial Cleanup.
• City of Cartersville
• City of Emerson (award-winner, Keep Georgia Beautiful 2003 Awards)
• City of Euharlee
• City of Kingston
• Town of Taylorsville (award-winner, Keep Georgia Beautiful 2004 Awards)
• City of White

Cleanups generally start at 9 a.m., but times and location may vary. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED. In 2003, over 400 volunteers picked up over 10,000 pounds of garbage from Bartow! For more information on all the above, call 770-387-5167.

LOCALLY, OVER 1000 VOLUNTEERS PICKED UP 30 TONS OF LITTER, RECYCLED 65 TONS OF PAPER, CANS, BOTTLES, AND ELECTRONICS, CLEANIED UP 30-ADOPT-A-ROAD SITES, AND PRESENTED EDUCATION PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT BARTOW.

So, don’t wait for someone else to do it… volunteer for this year’s Great American Cleanup™.
