The Bartow County School Recycling Program was started in 1999 with 4 pilot schools. In 2000, Sheri Henshaw, as the Director of Keep Bartow Beautiful, expanded the School Recycling Program and today there are 25 participating schools. Each school is provided recycling bins to put throughout the school and an 8x10 dumpster in which to consolidate their recycling.
The contest component of the Recycling Program was started in 2005 and is ongoing. It begins at the start of the school year and continues until March 31, after which Keep Bartow Beautiful randomly pulls the school bins and takes a final count of their recyclables. This is done by weighing the bins and then dividing the total weight by the total number of students. In May, the winning school receives a Wildlife Program, provided by either Wildlife Wonders or Sea World.
The program's results over the years have been awesome and inspiring. The program has recycled 894 tons since inception thru the 2012/2013 school year. Every school has the opportunity to compete for prizes, but all the students benefit as they learn how important it is to recycle. As they collect recyclables they are physically building evidence that proves just how many potential recyclables are thrown away instead of being put back into the process of creating other products. Parents often get involved too, sending recyclables to the schools with their kids. This engages families and families engage communities. It's a good example of how kids can often influence their parents; it’s not always the other way around! The contest proves a little competition can be a good thing as it often proves to be the catalyst toward a rewarding educational outcome.
