Our 4-H Pledge…

I pledge my Head to clearer thinking,
My Heart to greater loyalty
My Hands to larger service
And my Health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country
and my world.

ABOUT 4-H

What Is 4-H?

4-H is the only youth program that ties public and private resources-federal, state, and local governments, land-grant colleges and universities and their Cooperative Extension System, schools, 4-H parents, youth, and community-based organizations-to the single purpose of supporting the positive and successful development of youth.

How Do I Join 4-H?

In Bartow County, all youth between the age of 9 and 19 may be 4-H members, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex or disability. We even have a “Home School Club”. There are no membership fees! (There may be a minimal cost for some activities.)

Elementary School Clubs

5th Grade
Once a month our 4-H leader goes into the schools to lead clubs. A variety of programs are offered to the students. We focus on youth-development, environmental awareness and science.

Middle School Club Meetings

6th – 8th Grade
Clubs will meet before or after school once a month. Our middle school programs emphasize community involvement, youth-development and environmental awareness.

High School Club

9th – 12th Grade
Cultural diversity, community service, youth-development, environmental awareness and science are the focus for this level of programming. These students are more involved on a district, state and national level, focusing on leadership development. High School students meet once a month in the evenings or for special projects.

County Council Meetings

District Project Achievement (DPA)

Cloverleaf DPA http://georgia4horg.caes.uga.edu/public/more/guidebook/cloverleafprojectachievement.html
Gives our 4-H’ers an opportunity to research, compile and present information on a topic of their choice. There are over 50 different projects to choose from. For the 5th and 6th graders, this is a five minute presentation with visuals-they compete at Floyd College for a one day event. DPA was held Saturday, January 31, 2004.

DPA will enhance students speaking skills, increase knowledge in their project area, and help develop poise and confidence.

Here at the Bartow County 4-H office, we have everything they will need to create their visuals – die cuts, posters, markers, projectors, laminators, etc. We even have 4-H Teen Leaders to help! As we get closer to “DPA time”, our office is open in the late afternoons and early evenings to help students prepare for their presentations.

As a Junior 4-H’er http://georgia4horg.caes.uga.edu/public/more/guidebook/juniorprojectachievement.html
(7th and 8th Grader) or a Senior 4-H’er http://Georgia4horg.case.uga.edu/public/more/guidebook/seniorprojectachievement.html  (9th – 12th Grade)

This becomes more involved as they compete with 800+ Junior and Senior 4-H’ers form 39 counties during DPA weekend on March 19 – 21, 2004 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, GA. Their weekend is complimented with dances, workshops and recreation. Juniors and Seniors must also complete a “portfolio” or record book of all activities in their project area, 4-H and school. This counts for 40%-50% of their final score.

Senior 4-Her’s who win 1st place in our district have the opportunity to compete Statewide at Georgia State Congress (all expenses paid), where they will meet 4-H’ers from the state of Georgia. Competition at this level involves scholarship awards.

SUMMER CAMPS

Each summer 10,000+ Georgia 4-H'ers head off to camp!

Cloverleaf Summer Camp

Each Summer 5th and 6th graders pack their bags for a 5-day overnight camp filled with environmental, education classes, sports, recreation and fun. We rotate each year among one of the 4 state camp locations: Rock Eagle in Eatonton, Wahsega in Dahlonega, Tybee Island and Jekyll Island. For example, during the summer of 2003, 4-H'ers attended camp at Jekyll Island. They were given the opportunity to expand their knowledge of, and experience in beach, march and forest environments. They visited the Tidelands Nature Center (part of the Jekyll Island 4-H Center) on the eastern side of the island to learn canoeing, and participated in a luau. Bartow 4-H'ers learned to pull a seine net, shopped at St. Simon’s Island and spent the afternoon at “Summer Waves” water park.

Junior Summer Camp

7th and 8th graders

Senior Summer Camp

9th – 12th graders get together with Senior 4-H'ers from around the state at this 5-day camp focusing on environmental, education, challenges, sports, recreation, fun and friends. Their camp experience includes white water rafting.
