WATER QUALITY
Water System Resources

Acquiring, maintaining and distributing pristine water resources are the primary operational responsibilities and priorities of every employee at the Bartow County Water Department. The vast majority (94%) of our water resources are obtained through contracts with the Cities of Adairsville, Cartersville, and Emerson and with water purchase agreements with Cobb County, Cherokee County and the Polk County Water, Sewerage & Solid Waste Authority. The remainder of our water supply (6%) is provided from our independently owned and operated Bolivar Spring located in northeastern Bartow County. Surface water withdrawn from Lake Allatoona in eastern Bartow County by our major suppliers constitutes approximately 85% of the total potable (drinkable) water volume within our utility system. Annually, the Bartow County Water Department is responsible for processing, treating and distributing over 2.1 billion gallons (5.8 Million Gallons-per-Day) of water to our serviced customers.
Water Quality Testing

Water quality tests are routinely performed throughout the Bartow County Water System to ensure that our resources either meet or exceed the minimum national drinking water standards established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) within the Safe Drinking Water Act adopted into Federal law on December 16, 1974. The United States Congress amended this article of legislation in 1996, requiring public water utility providers to publish and distribute Annual Water Quality Reports detailing their most recent drinking water analysis test results to their serviced customers, local community and other interested parties. The latest Bartow County Water Department Annual Water Quality Report* can be obtained inside our main office at 50 Nelson Street in Cartersville, Georgia or mailed upon individual request. * (Note: The Maximum Containment Level (MCL) for Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM's) and Total Haloacetic Acids) TTAA's were inadvertently omitted during the printing process for this year's Water Quality Report. The correct MCLs are 80 for TTHMs and 60 for TTAAs.) For additional information, questions or comments regarding drinking water quality testing regulations contact the Bartow County Water Department @ (770) 387-5170, visit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official Web site at www.epa.gov/safewater, or call the Safe Drinking Water Hotline @ 1-800-426-4791. The Bartow County Water Department is pleased to report that drinking water quality tests performed upon this public utility system have shown our water resources to be safe, exceeding all water quality standards established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As a result of consistently safe drinking water quality testing results regarding lead and copper levels, the Bartow County Water Department has been placed on a reduced monitoring testing program for these particular minerals. Our department has also received testing waivers for previously undetected substances confirmed by environmental researchers to have a minuscule probability of contaminating our water resources. We have additionally received the following awards and recognitions for our drinking water quality excellence and outstanding operational performance:

 1. Operators Meritorious Service Award (American Water Works Association, 1997)
 2. Certificate of Dedicated Service and Leadership (EPA & State of Georgia, 1997)
 3. Elizabeth McEntire Award (Georgia Water & Pollution Control Association, 1999)

 4. Vice President Al Gore's Hammer Award
 5. Award of Excellence (American Water Works Association, 2002)

The Bartow County Water Department is determined to guarantee the continuation and improvement of drinking water quality excellence through the implementation of advanced testing methods, technological developments and extensive environmental research provided to this utility system from our membership with professional organizations such as the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and National Rural Water Association (NRWA). Our department is an active partner of the Bartow County Environmental Management System (E.M.S.), an association of local governmental and industrial organizations committed to analyzing and reducing the impacts of their activities upon the environment. The Environmental Protection Division (E.P.D.) has also mandated our department to establish and implement a Backflow Prevention (B.F.P.) Device Installation & Testing Program requiring the installation and annual performance testing of backflow prevention assembly devices upon every non-residential and irrigation system service connection within our water utility system to provide further protection against possible water resource contamination.
